PURPOSE:To obtain the engine control quantity calculation method which can be used even if the engine properties vary, by representing the variables which represent the engine state quantity in dimensionless form, in the calculation of the engine control values by using the above-described variables. CONSTITUTION:An engine revolution sensor 2, air flow sensor 3, and a crank angle sensor 4 are connected with a controller 1. The ignition timing signal S which the controller 1 outputs is outputted into an ignition circuit 5, and a spark plug 7 is ignition-operated in an optimum timing through a distributor 6 on the basis of the output of the controller 1. With such constitution, the ignition timing as the engine control quantity is calculated by the variables which represent the engine state quantity. In this case, the variable is represented in dimensionless form. For example, the ignition timing is calculated on the basis of the engine revolution speed and the engine load as two variables. Therefore, the variation of the engine properties can be disposed without reducing the resolution faculty such as the variables and control quantity.
