PURPOSE:To control tracking without being practically affected by the inclination of a disk, by using modulated signals obtained from two areas of a photodetector and peak values of these signals to perform a specific operation and using a signal resulting from this operation as a tracking error signal. CONSTITUTION:Modulated signals Ia and Ib obtained from two areas of the photodetector and peak values Iap and Ipb of these signals are used to generate signals Ia-Ib, Ia+Ib, Iap-Ibp, and Iap+Ibp. These generated signals are operated in accordance with {Ia-Ib, Iap+Ibp-Ia+Ib, Iap-Ibp}, and the signal obtained as the result is used as the tracking error signal. Thus, an offset component of tracking does not occur even if the disk is inclined.
