PROCESS FOR PRODUCING BENZYL ESTERS OF AROMATIC HYDROXYCARBOXYLIC ACIDS

Aromatic hydroxycarboxylate benzyl esters are prepd. by reacting aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid or its lower alkyl ester i.e. para- hydroxy benzoic acid and 4-hydroxyisophthalic acid with benzyl alcohol in the presence of R2Sn=Z, RpSnXq or Ti(OR)4. In the formula, R, same or not, is C1-4 alkyl; Z=O or S, X=halogen or - OCOR'(R'=C1-11 alkyl); p=2, 3 or 4, q=0, 1 or 2, p+q=4. When q is 2, both X form a -OCO-R2-COO-[R2=C1-10 (un)satd. alkylene or arylene!. Coboiling substance formative solvent with water is used for the acceleration of dehydration and adjustment of rxn. temp.
