PURPOSE:To perform the welding with an optional pitch and to attach and detach an object to be welded with high efficiency by moving a welding gun freely in the horizontal direction by a combination of two carriages which are movable in the directions of an X axis and a Y axis. CONSTITUTION:The carriage 14 and the carriage 17 are provided freely slidably in the direction of the X axis on a rail 12 of automatic welding units 10 and in the direction of the Y axis on a rail 15 at right angles to this and driven by motors 20 and 21 respectively. Then, the welding gun 34 is fitted on the carriage 17 and the welding is performed via an actuator 40. The plural welding units 10 are arranged around a prescribed clamping device and after a body panel is clamped, the carriages 14 and 17 are moved via a prescribed control means and the welding is performed. Accordingly, the welding can be performed with the optional pitch from the small pitch up to the large pitch and the object to be welded is very easily attached and detached.
