NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (X is halogen). EXAMPLE:2-Chloro-5-acetylpyridine. USE:Useful as a production intermediate for insecticidal compounds. For example, it can be used as an intermediate for 2-[1-(2-chloro-5-pyridyl)ethyl]-2-nitro iminoimidazolidine and 2-[1-(2-chloro-5-pyridine)ethyl]-2-cyanoiminoimidazolidine which are known insecticidal compounds. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II (e.g. 6-chloronicotinyl chloride) with a methyl metal compound (e.g. methylmagnesium bromide). The starting compound of formula II can be synthesized e.g. by reacting the corresponding nicotinic acid with phosphorus pentachloride.
