PURPOSE:To readily obtain the titled compound of high optical purity in high yield, by reacting S-(-)-(beta-hydroxyphenyl)-iminothiazolidine (salt) with a chlorinating agent in an organic solvent and treating the resultant product with an alkali. CONSTITUTION:S-(-)-3-(beta-Hydroxyphenethyl)-2-iminothiazolidine expressed by formula I or a salt thereof is reacted with a chlorinating agent, preferably thionyl chloride in an organic solvent, preferably carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-octane, isooctane or n-decane and the resultant product is then treated with an alkali to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula II.
