PURPOSE:To enable an electrode consumption rate to be held in an epoch- making low level, by using a water solution, in which the content of 0.5-85% alkoxy-replacement-oxyethylene derivative as a water soluble compound is added as an essential component, as the machining fluid. CONSTITUTION:The electric discharge machining fluid, in which water is previously processed by ion exchange resin so as to obtain the specific resistance of about 10<4>OMEGA.cm or more thereafter 0.5-85% alkoxy-replacement-oxyethylene derivative as shown by a general formula (I) is added, stirred and dissolved, is used (where Ar is residue of benzene or naphthalene, R1 is optional replacement radical in alkyl group of hydrogen or carbon number 1-4, R2 is optional replacement radical in hydrogen, methyl group and ethyl group and n is integer of 1-100 further R1 may exist in any position of benzene nucleus or naphthalene nucleus). If the water solution A, as described in the above, is used, an electrode provides not only a low consumption rate but also an excellent machining speed.
