<p>Round (I) has a propellant charge and comprises a hollow jacket contg. a shaped slug in its cavity; the slug has a metallic body with a longitudinal cylindrical opening throughout. The opening is exposed at one end to the propellant and has a length:dia. ratio of 5 at least. A pyrotechnic compsn. fills the opening and contains fuel, oxidiser and binder as a column of dia. 0.035 ins.; on firing the compsn. is ignited by propellant to provide a visible trajectory trace. The mass ratio of the slug to the pyrotechnic compsn. is sufficiently large to cause the slug to act as a heat sink to slow down the reaction speed of the compsn. leading to extended trace burn times.</p> |
