PURPOSE:To reduce the cost of a linear motor by composing a magnetic circuit to form a magnetic flux closing loop in a direction perpendicular to the operating direction of the motor to eliminate a commutator, thereby simplifying the structure. CONSTITUTION:The stator of a linear motor is composed of permanent magnets 1a, 1b and a stationary yoke 2. A movable body is composed of a movable yoke 3 and a coil 4. A magnetic flux emitted from the N-pole of the magnet 1a passes the coil 4 of an air gap and enters a portion opposed to the magnet 1a of the yoke 3 to advance in the yoke 3 without passing the coil 4 in the slot 5 of the yoke 3 through the portion opposed to the magnet 1b and again the coil 4 wound in the air gap, the magnet 1b and the yoke 3 to form a mag netic flux closing loop. This loop is formed perpendicularly to the operating direction of the motor.
