PURPOSE:To obtain the titled cellulose remarkably excellent in solubility in caustic soda without excessively decreasing its degree of polymerization, by cooking a cellulosic fiber impregnated with a swelling agent and, if necessary, washing with water with high-pressure steam and subjecting it to explosive comminution. CONSTITUTION:Cellulose as a starting material is impregnated with 10-300wt% at lease one selling agent selected from among an organic acid, an organic base, an amide, urea (derivative), an inorganic acid, an inorganic base, an inorganic base, CS2, a similar compound or an aqueous solution thereof (e.g., 0.4-5.0 N aqueous NaOH solution) and, if necessary, washed with water, fed to an explosive comminutor externally heated to a specified temperature and cooked for 5-600sec by feeding the comminutor with high-pressure steam at a pressure of 10-60kg/cm<2> from a boiler. The cooked cellulose is subjected to explosive comminution by instantaneously expanding it by ejection into the air by shutting the steam valve on he boiler side of the explosive comminutor and immediately opening the ball valve on the receiver side.
