PURPOSE:To heighten the grade of display by shifting the center of image by about 1/2 picture element for each frame while scanning almost the whole of an effective display picture by each frame. CONSTITUTION:In each of the first and second scanning electrode groups, scan ning is made first by number one of the first scanning electrode 11 and number one of the second scanning electrode 12, then, by number two of the first scan ning electrode 11 and number two of the second scanning electrode 12 and so on. In the next frame, a switching means 61 outputs only scanning timing signals immediately, and outputs remaining scanning timing signals just before next clock. Thereby, a register 32b starts scanning 1 clock before a register 32a, and display position moves vertically by 1 scanning electrode pitch at each frame. As one picture element is constituted of two scanning lines and one signal electrode, an image moves vertically by amout 1/2 picture element. This means that display corresponding to twice the number of scanning lines is performed without increasing substantial number of scanning lines, and the exteme high-definition display is obtained.
