The network is formed by a first passive optical fibre network interconnecting various stations 10-14 for production, storage and/or use of information and intended to route the signals representing the information transmitted, and a second, active, office-type network interconnecting the various stations and intended to route control signals; the passive network comprises front-end units 20-24, each associated with a particular station and comprising; electro-optical transmitting circuits and opto-electrical receiving circuits interposed between a memory unit of the corresponding station and an optical conductor, and a control circuit linked to the transmission and reception circuits for authorising, or otherwise, the operation of a front-end unit in sending or in receiving on the basis of control signals transmitted on the active network. The network can especially be used for the transfer of digitised images, in particular in the field of medical imagery. <IMAGE>
