PURPOSE:To minimize or eliminate alternative operations in and out of a track, which are caused by defects on a disk surface, by providing a format means that invalidates a defective sector in a disk at the time of a format action. CONSTITUTION:When the format action starts, continuous sector-by-sector address that are allocated to the disk D are set to '0'. A cylinder address in an address conversion table corresponding to a logical address given from a computer main frame 10 is read out of a memory 23, and such discrimination is made whether a defective part exists at the cylinder address. If not, the sector is formatted as an address '0' and incremented by one, and an all address termination decision action is made. If a defective part is found, a defect information table in the address conversion table is read. If the sector has defects, the sector at the address concerned is invalidated, and said address is incremented by one.
