PURPOSE:To drive a picture element having an accurate threshold by impressing writing pulses consisting of plural pulses to the picture element on a scanning signal line. CONSTITUTION:Picture elements A, B, C... consisting of ferromagnetic liquid crystal indicating two or more stabilized orientation states are arranged among matric electrodes consisting of scanning signal lines S1, S2, S3... and information signal lines I1, I2, I3... on a liquid crystal element. Writing pulses consisting of plural pulses set up a peak value near the threshold of said liquid crystal are impressed to the picture elements on the lines S1.... Consequently, picture elements having no accurate threshods can be inverted. In such constitution, damage to be applied to the liquid crystal can be reduced as compared to a case using unit pulses.
