Process for cleaning toxic and carcinogenic impurities and hydrogen halides from waste gases, flue gases and combustion gases from, for example, domestic heating systems, power stations and waste incineration plant, internal combustion engines or similar firing systems, using an adsorbent in which the gas is cooled to a temperature lying within the range of the dew point temperature for the water vapour contained in the flue gas and, after commencement of the droplet condensation, while maintaining a working temperature within the range of the saturation limit for water vapour, is led through or over the adsorbent. In this process the gas is cooled to a working temperature lying between 10 DEG below and 25 DEG above the dew point temperature. In order to remove the heavy metals or heavy metal oxides, pellets with high porosity are used which have been produced using metal oxides, in particular alkali metal oxides and/or alkaline earth metal oxides and iron oxide and, if appropriate, manganese dioxide, by mixing lime and quartz sand with a grading curve of below 0.3 mm in equal, at least 10 % by weight, [sic] subsequent addition of the chemically or catalytically or quasi-catalytically active materials together with an amount of water sufficient for their complete hydration, and subsequent, in each case multi-stage, pelletisation and thermal treatment at temperatures up to 500 DEG C.
