(+)-13-norfaranal of Formula (I> <IMAGE> is prepared by forming an anion from the compound of formula <IMAGE> reacting the anion with a compound of formula <IMAGE> esterifying the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> treating the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> with a hydroxy-protecting agent; reducing the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> reacting the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> with a halogenating or acylating agent; reducing the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> hydrolysing the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> and oxidising the resulting compound of formula <IMAGE> to form (+)-13-norfaranal. (+)-13-norfaranal is a known tracing feromon of Pharaoh's ant and can be used for the control of this insect.
