PURPOSE:To enhance the separating performance of a sheet feed device for a copying machine or the like, by making the sheet feed speed upon secondary separation larger than that upon primary separation during which a feed roller feeds a sheet overcoming a separating roller. CONSTITUTION:When a motor M1 is operated, a kick roller 219, feed rollers 253, 257, separating rollers 256, 269 are rotated. Accordingly, the kick roller 219 feeds out the lowermost one of stacked originals Q. This original Q is nipped between the feed roller 253 and the separating roller 265. The feed roller 253 feeds the original Q while the separating roller 265 expels another original following the original Q, that is, primary separation is effected. The original having been primarily separated is further subjected to secondary separation by the feed roller 257 and the separating roller 269. Further, the rotational speeds V1, V2, V3, V4, of the rollers 253, 265, 257, 269 are set to have the follow ing relationship (V3-V4)>(V1-V2).
