The machine is fed with alternating current with at least two phases or one phase and an auxiliary phase, the phases being detected on opposite sides of the switch (11,12) with regard to predetermined parameters comprising the phase angle in the voltage fed from the power source. Dependent upon the detect4d parameter values, the switch is changed over from broken to closed positions in sequence and with specific timing. - In the starting equipment is included a control unit (2) which emits signals for the changeover of the switch dependent upon the detected extents of each phase on opposite sides of the switch, so that the phases are coupled in sequence. This control unit incorporates first and second (17,18) detectors for the parameters before and after the coupling unit (1), and a central computer (16) which receives signals from the detectors, and emits control signals for sequential changeover of the switch.
