PURPOSE:To make measurement of smoothness of a sheet surface immune from its upheaved condition and direction of view, by developing an image of a shadow image of the sheet surface as a stationary image from above and by calculating the smoothness data on each picture element intensity. CONSTITUTION:Parallel beams of light are radiated aslant from above onto the surface of a sheet of paper 2 as it is conveyed by feed rollers 1 by a stroboscopic lamps 3 and an area of the irradiated surface is measured by a TV- camera 4 from above the sheet of paper. A video signal issued out from the camera 4 after conversion to digital data by a controlling circuit 6 is stored in an image memory 7 and then, calculation is made on the smoothness by a programme from the intensity data. By this construction as a shadow image of the sheet surface is developed from above, an error caused by upheaval of the sheet surface is eliminated. Further, as the 2-dimensional image by surface irradiation is employed. Calculation of smoothness of a sheet surface having a directional characteristic is available with high accuracy.
