The invention relates to a particular configuration of a cooling drum such as is used, for example, in the cooling of hot dross (skimmings). The outer lateral surface 1 is connected to the inner lateral surface 4 in a thermally elastic fashion. The thermal elasticity is achieved by one or more compensators 3 which are arranged in the region of the outer lateral surface, preferably remote from the filling opening 11. To ensure the relative movement of inner and outer lateral surfaces, there are provided between said surfaces, at least in the region of the support (6) of the cooling drum 2, slide plates 5 which can also be used in level function for holding the distribution tubes 10 of the cooling liquid (liquid coolant, fluid coolant, cold-carrier). The cooling drum proves to be virtually insensitive to being heated up, as a result of which particularly hot dross, particularly in the region of the melting point, can be processed.
