In this modular control system for data transmission, a bus manager (2), several addressable analog and/or digital input or output units (1a, b, c) for data, and a power supply unit (3) are provided as basic system components. A bus line is used for parallel connection between the bus manager (2) and the individual units (1a, b, c). The bus line is made up of individual sections (4a, b, c), one end of which is fixed to an input or output unit (1a, b, c), and the other end of which has a bus plug (5a, b, c), which is plugged into the bus coupler (6a, b, c or 7) of the adjacent unit (1a, b, c) or of the adjacent bus manager (2). In each unit (1a, b, c), there is an electrical connection, which is internal to the device, between the bus coupler (6a, b, c) and the bus line section (4a, b, c). Data is fed serially into the bus manager (2) via a two-wire line or optical waveguide (12). The bus manager (2) converts the data from serial to parallel form, and simultaneously or subsequently converts it to a slower data stream to be fed to the bus line. <IMAGE>
