The character input system can be used in a cash register or similar, and has a key input area (2) which is provided for entering information, with a character input key group and a code input key group. The keys of the key input area (2) are in each case provided with addresses which differ from each other. The system also has a first conversion area, which converts numeric codes which are entered through the code input key group into codes which represent predefined characters, a second conversion area, which converts address information from the character input key group into codes which represent predefined characters, and a control device to control functions of these devices. The code input key group can be used to enter characters which do not belong to the characters which correspond to the character input key group. <IMAGE>
