PURPOSE:To minimize the possibility of influence of thicknesses of sheets during sheet separation, in a sheet feed device such as an automatic original feed device or the like for a copying machine, by alternately arranging feed and separating rollers in a noncontacting condition. CONSTITUTION:An original Q is nipped between feed and separating rollers 253, 265 in a noncontact condition. Further, the thus nipped original is conveyed by the feed roller 253 while another original following the original Q is expelled, that is, primary separation is effected. The original Q having been primarily separated is subjected to secondary separation by means of feed and separating rollers 257, 269. Since the feed roller 253 and the separating roller 265 are not make in contact with each other, they may easily nap an original irrespective of its thickness. Further, the overlapping amount between the rollers 253 and 265 is set such that they does not give any curl to the original and a thin original is bent into a corrugated form to have high firmness. Accordingly, an original may be easily napped between the rollers 257, 269.
