PURPOSE:To perform the maintenance and management of a bolt so as to be deliberately replaced before its breakage and the like by deciding the replace ment of the bolt after conducting a nondestructive test and/or a destructive test in accordance with the damage quantity of bolts determined by calculation. CONSTITUTION:A creep damage rate phic and a fatigue damage rate phif in accor dance with the using conditions of bolts are obtained and a total damage quan tity phi that is the sum of those two quantities is made as an index. The total damage quantity phi is classified to three different ranges according to the values of the quantity phi by means of two constants (a) and (b) (a<b). When phi<a holds, the total damage quantity phi is to be calculated again thereafter; when a<=phi<=b holds, the nondestructive test of the bolt is to be conducted; and, when b<phi true, a destructive test is to be conducted. When deterioration is found in a material as the result of the destructive test, the bolt is replaced and the nondestructive test is conducted on the remaining bolts. When an abnormality is found in the result of the nondestructive test, the bolt is replaced or the total damage quantity phi is calcurated again.
