A method and a device for measuring the concentration of a gas component in a gas mixture is disclosed. The mixture is composed of known gases having a certain number of different atomic numbers. The gas mixture is irradiated with radiation, with the exception of alpha -radiation, which radiation passes through the gas component over a predetermined length. A radiation detector having an energy differentiating function counts the radiation quanta still present after the predetermined path and the concentration of the gas component is measured on the basis of the attenuation of the radiation on passing through the gas component. The device comprises a chamber (6) with an inlet and outlet (9, 10) for the passage of the gas mixture, a radiation generating unit (5), a radiation detector (7, 8) with differentiating function at a specified distance from the radiation generating system to determine the attenuation produced by the gas component and a concentration indicator (11) for converting the output signal of the radiation detector into concentration values and for indicating the concentration values converted. <IMAGE>
