The invention relates to a method for lengthening steel electrodes (1, 2, 3), clamped vertically in liftable and lowerable supporting arms (4) and capable of being supplied with electric energy via the supporting arms, of a plant which is heated in multiphase manner by an electric arc and is intended for the ladle-metallurgical aftertreatment of previously melted steel, the remaining pieces of the steel electrodes (1, 2, 3) being joined, whilst still clamped in the supporting arms, to lengthening pieces (1a, 2a, 3a) arranged at the lower end of the remaining pieces by means of arc butt welding, in particular chamber welding. An apparatus suitable for carrying out the method comprises a carriage (10) which can be moved into the position of the ladle (5) and on which the lengthening pieces (1a, 2a, 3a) are held vertically in mountings (14). <IMAGE>
