PURPOSE:To produce the titled polystyrene in a short time in high yield and inexpensively without using a large amount of an organic solvent, by polymerizing an (alkyl)styrene by bulk polymerization by the use of a specific radical polymerization initiator and a specified chain transfer agent. CONSTITUTION:An (alkyl)styrene is radically polymerized by the use of both a carboxyl group-containing radical polymerization initiator [e.g. succinic acid peroxide, gamma,gamma'-azobis(gamma-cyanovaleric acid), etc.] as an initiator and a carboxyl group-containing thiol (e.g. thioglycolic acid, alpha-mercaptopropionic acid, etc.) as a chain transfer agent by bulk polymerization preferably at 50-200 deg.C. The amount of the initiator used is preferably 0.01-15pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. (alkyl)styrene and the amount of the chain transfer agent is preferably 0.001-10 pts.wt. EFFECT:Molecular weight and number of COOH of polymer molecule are readily controlled by changing a ratio of polymer obtained by relinking reaction, termination reaction of polymer radical and a polymer formed by chain reaction.
