PURPOSE:To increase a throughput of printing in a printer by providing a printing dot count detection logic circuit, a printing dot counter, a total dot counter and a divider as a means to calculate printing dot density. CONSTITUTION:When a microprocessor writes printing pattern data into a memory, the number of printing dots contained in one byte of printing pattern data is output to a printing dot counter 2 by entering printing pattern data into a printing dot count detection logic circuit 1 simultaneously. A printing dot counter 2 counts the number of input printing dots, while a total dot counter 3 counts the frequency of data entries into the printing dot count detection logic circuit 1 to count the total dot count of printing pattern data. The microprocessor writes data of a divider 4 at a time when data of printing dot density is required, thus obtaining the printing dot density in the total printing pattern data by that time.
