A method of recognizing cracks in a strand skin during the continuous casting of metals within a continuous casting mould, wherein the continuous casting mould and the strand (3) perform a periodically discontinuous relative movement (1), characterised in that eddy currents (12) are induced in the strand skin (4) by means of a first magnetic field (11) produced in a side wall (2) of the continuous casting mould, and that a second magnetic field produced in the side wall (2) of the continuous casting mould by these eddy currents (12) is measured and compared to a limit value.
