A glow plug (10) for a diesel engine comprises a hollow holder (12), a U-shaped ceramic heating element (11) which is mounted therein and has an outwardly extending end, an external connection terminal (14), a tape-like elastic metal conductor (15) which connects the terminal to one end of the heating element, and an insulating element (13) for mounting the terminal so that it is insulated from the hollow holder. The heating element which consists of a conductive ceramic element is formed from an outwardly extending, U-shaped heating section and a pair of parallel conductor components which extend rearwards from both ends of the heating section. One conductor section is connected to an inner wall of the hollow holder and the other is connected, insulated from the hollow holder, to the terminal via an inner space of the hollow holder and using the connection means (15). Ends of the metal conductor are soldered to the other conductor section (22) or to the outer connection terminal. <IMAGE>
