PURPOSE:To recognize the recording operation by mere observation of a monitor by temporarily interrupting a character signal when the character signal is superimposed on a video signal to be recorded and monitored. CONSTITUTION:When a REC switch 52 for deciding the timing for performing the recording operation is turned on, and a frame recording mode is set, the video signals of one field are respectively recorded on two tracks on a magnetic sheet 1 by heads 3-1, 3-2. The character signal ID is read from a RAM27 by a CPU40 and superimposed on the video signal through a data modulator 14, a recording amplifier 16 to perform an ID recording. The ID is generated from a character generator 84, superimposed on the video signal, outputted to a monitor 13, a SW6 is turned off, the character is erased, the SW6 is turned on again and the ID is displayed again.
