Interpolymers of vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbons or halohydrocarbons and natural or synthetic 1,3-diene polymers are prepared by polymerizing a solution of the rubbery polymer in the hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon by agitating in water and heating the suspension, until (a) at least 15% of the vinylidene monomer has undergone polymerization and (b) the viscosity of the partially polymerized solution is at least 75 poises at 40 DEG C., then adding a watersoluble dispersing agent and continuing heating, with agitation, until the polymerization is complete. Styrene, vinyl naphthalene, nuclear substituted alkyl- or halostyrenes, or mixtures thereof e.g. with a -methyl styrene, or butadiene, isoprene, acrylic acid, methyl, ethyl, butyl and a -ethylhexyl acrylates and methacrylates, acrylamide methacrylamides, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile may be polymerized and the rubbery polymers may be natural rubber, synthetic polyisoprene or butadiene and interpolymers of butadiene and/or isoprene with styrene, acrylonitrile and acrylic esters. Catalysts, anti-oxidants, plasticizers, heat and light stabilizers, polymerization modifiers and colouring materials may also be included in the polymerizable mixtures. The preferred dispersing agent is a water-soluble interpolymer of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and/or methacrylate in an amount of from 0,02 to 1,0% and in a solution with a pH value of between 3 and 4. Examples describe the polymerization of styrene monomer alone or with a -methyl styrene, and a butadiene-styrene rubbery copolymer in the presence of a di-t-butyl peroxide catalyst, an anti-oxidant, a mercaptan modifier and a hydrocarbon oil lubricant to a 40% conversion and with the further addition of water, calcium chloride, and an interpolymer of acrylic acid, -2-ethylhexyl acrylate as dispersing agent to a complete polymerization to yield a product in the form of small spherical beads.
