868,911. Stuffing-box substitutes. FLEXIBOX Ltd. Feb. 12, 1960 [Feb. 23, 1959], No. 6107/59. Class 122 (5). In a mechanical seal comprising a rotary sealring b resiliently pressed into sealing contact with a stationary seal-ring a mounted on the face of the stuffing-box i of a pump or other apparatus to be sealed, the stationary seal-ring a has a part of greater outer diameter than the rotary seal-ring b clamped to the stuffing-box face by screws on a pitch circle which is not less than the stuffing-box bore, whereby the clamping-pressure is transmitted directly to the stuffing-box face. The ring b is pressed against the ring a by a coil-spring c and is sealed to the pump shaft g by packing washers e. The ring a has a shoulder h pressed against the stuffing-box face by the screws j which are screwed into a flange k secured by screws n to the pump casing m. Passages (not shown) are provided in the flange k for cooling or heating fluid. In a modification, Fig. 7, the stationary seal-ring a<SP>1</SP> has a taper fit within a ring w pressed by the screws against an annular member x secured to and forming part of the stuffing-box i, the screws being threaded in a plate 9 made in halves secured together by screws 10.
