PURPOSE:To carry out easy sterilization without requiring a special installation for the sterilization by immersing the part from a pretreatment device to the inlet of a membrane module in a liquid taken out of the membrane module. CONSTITUTION:The operation of a reverse osmosis device is stopped and the sterilization operation is carried out when the flow rate of the permeated water is decreased by microorganisms contamination during the operation in desalting of sea water with said device. The concd. brine taken out of the membrane module 6 is introduced by a pipe 11 and a branch pipe 12 into the suction side of a booster pump 2 to immerse and sterilize the pump 2, the pretreatment device 3 such as filter, a high-pressure pump 4 and pipings to connect these for about 24hr. Said brine is otherwise introduced to the suction side of the high-pressure pump 4 to immerse and sterilize the high-pressure pump and pipings. The concd. brine after use is released from a pipe 14 upon ending of the sterilization. The permeated water from a produced water tank 7 is then introduced into the suction sides of the pumps 2, 4 by a pipe 15 and is rested for about 24hr. A large difference in concn. and difference is osmotic pressure are generated by such replacement and the sterilization effect is im proved.
