PURPOSE:To simplify the circuit constitution by using a preset counter and storing a data relating to a difference between an error location data and a reference data of the preset counter into a ROM. CONSTITUTION:An input data is fed to a syndrome calculation circuit 1, where the syndrome is calculated and the calculated syndrome is fed to a latch circuit 3 and a latch output is fed to a ROM 4 storing an error location data as an address data. The data read from the ROM 4 subject to address designation by the latch output is fed to a preset up-counter 5 as a preset data and the counter 5 is counted up by using the said data as an initial value. When the preset up-counter 5 reaches a full count being a reference value, a ripple carry output is outputted from the preset up-counter 5. The ripple carry output is fed to an exclusive OR circuit 6 as an error correction signal together with an output of a data delay circuit 2 to obtain a composite data from the exclusive OR circuit 6.
