PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material for surface active agents, etc., without using excess amounts of acid and alkali, by reacting alpha-amino-epsilon-caprolactam with formaldehyde and/or paraformaldehyde by the use of inexpensive hydrogen instead of expensive formic acid in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:alpha-Amino-epsilon-caprolactam is reacted with foraldehyde and/or paraformaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a noble metal catalyst (e.g. metallic catalyst of group VIII such as ruthenium, platinum, etc.) in 1-4C aliphatic alcohol (preferably methanol) or in a mixed solvent containing >=40wt% of the alcohol and water usually at 8-9atom. total pressure preferably at 50-120 deg.C to give the aimed compound. The amount of formaldehyde and/or paraformaldehyde used is preferably 1.8-2.2 equivalents based on 1mol alpha- amino-epsilon-caprolactam.
