Solids in a gas(A) at pressure(I) are transferred from zone (C) to zone(D) contg. gas(B) at pressure (II) without gas from zone(D) passing into zone(C) by (i) conveying the solids from zone (C) to an intermediate zone(E) via a moving bed of settled solids extending upwards in tubular form from a wider reservoir which collects the solids in its base portion, (ii) providing a void space at a lower presser than (I) or (II) in the outer periphery of the tubular portion of solids in the upper portion of zone(E), (iii) continuously passing settled solids from zone(E) to zone(D) and (IV) discharging the gases from the space.
