PURPOSE:To reduce CPU load, to shorten time for retrieving at the time of tape deficiency and to heighten efficiency of processing of the device by forming no signal sections at every plural sectors of tape format and retrieving a designated sector by an interruption signal that detected the no signal section. CONSTITUTION:The CPU of a computer 21 operates a magnetic erasing head 24 at every block consisting of plural sectors 14 and forms no signal record sections 15, and then, makes a write circuit 22 perform formatting operation to record a format 13 on a magnetic tape 12. When such a tape 12 starts running, a waveform shaping circuit 27 generates an interruption signal 17 every time the no record section 15 is detected. The signal 17 is counted by a counting circuit 27, and count output is sent to the computer 21 together with the output of an interruption controlling circuit 29. Thus, retrieving process of the sector 14 by the CPU is necessary only for a block to which the designated sector 14 belongs. When it is judged that damage occurred in the tape 12, the status of write error is set, and thereby retrieving is made quick.
