PURPOSE:To improve writing and reproducing characteristics and corrosion resistance and to reduce cost by using a material having high corrosion resistance and good magnetic and photomagnetic characteristics as an RE-TM layer to form a photomagnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric layer 2, the photomagnetic recording layer 3 consisting of the RE-TM layer, an adhesive layer 4 and a cover substrate 5 are successively laminated and formed on a substrate 1 consisting of a glass or resin plate having high transparency and good optical characteristics. The RE-TM layer to form the recording layer 3 is made of, for example, an RE- Fe-Co-M alloy having 120nm film thickness. A rare earth element such as Tb is used for the RE and the amt. thereof is 18-35atmoic% of the entire amt. of the alloy. The content of the Co is specified to 0-20atomic% of the entire amt. M is Fe, Co and element except the rare earth element and contains at least 1 or >=2 kinds of Ta, V, Hf or Nb. The content thereof is 2-10atomic% of the entire amt. of Fe+Co+M. The writing and reproducing characteristics as well as the corrosion resistance are thereby improved and the cost is reduced.
