PURPOSE:To prevent the setting error attended with the setting by troublesome manual operation by storing the setting information from a high-order equipment and setting the operating mode based on the storage. CONSTITUTION:An operation mode setting information reception control circuit 11 recognizes it as the setting of operating mode when an ER signal from a communication controller is in OFF state and an RS signal is in ON state. Synchronization is taken by using an operation mode setting synchronizing data sent from the communication controller via an SD line in this state and the operating mode information sent succeedingly is set to an operating mode register 12 to set the operating mode. Thus, the setting of the operating modeof a MODEM most suited to the system is executed from the communication controller and the operation mode setting error is prevented.
