PURPOSE:To attain high picture quality due to a separate recording of a luminance signal and a chrominance signal by using a main head and a sub head so as to record/reproduce different signals respectively thereby attaining two-screen simultaneous reproduction and two-screen momentary changeover reproduction or the like. CONSTITUTION:The main heads A, B are arranged oppositely at an interval of 180 deg. on a rotary cylinder 10. Further, the sub heads A', B' are arranged oppositely at an interval of 180 deg. on the cylinder 10. After the main heads A, B record the 1st signal, a magnetic tape is rewound, reproduction capstan servo is applied by using a control signal and the signal is in tracking with a main head recording track. When the 2nd signal includes a video signal, the cylinder servo is applied by using the vertical synchronizing signal to match the recording phase and the 2nd input signal is recorded while the switching position comes to the upper and lower position of the screen. In tracing the same location as that at recording in case of the reproduction, the 1st signal is reproduced from the main heads A, B and the 2nd signal is reproduced from the sub heads B', A' at the same time.
