PURPOSE:To write and read the data of variable length without noticing the unit of a recording block of a streaming type magnetic tape device by a CPU by providing a 1st means dividing all data into an integral number of multiple of a recording block and writing the result to each recording block, a 2nd means recognizing the recording block and a 3rd means reading the data written in the storage area of data. CONSTITUTION:The data received from a host (CPU) are connected to the input (1) of a gate 2 through an input terminal 2, an output of a data counter 3 counting data number is connected to the input of a gate 4 and the decoder 5 and the output of the gate 4 is connected to an input (2) of the gate 2. Further, the output of the gate 2 is connected to the input of a data buffer 6. Further, the data read from the magnetic head 9 of the streaming type magnetic tape device are connected to data buffers 12, 13 through the input terminal 11 and the output of the address counter 14 is connected to an address input terminal of the data buffer 12 and the output of the data buffer 12 is connected to the input (1) of the gate 22 and the input of the gate 16.
