PURPOSE:To obtain reinforcing fibers having improve adhesivity, by hydrolyzing an aqueous solution consisting of a metal alkoxide and substituted metal alkoxide to give a sol and forming a fibrous gel using the resultant sol. CONSTITUTION:A hydrolysis catalyst is added to an aqueous solution consisting of a blend of a metal alkoxide with a substituted metal alkoxide in which at least one alkoxy group thereof is substituted by an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group, amono group or alkylamino group to hydrolyze the alkoxides and give a sol, which is then heat-treated at a given temperature and concentrated and spun at a temperature within the range to give 100-500 P viscosity of the concentrated sol and give a fibrous gel. The resultant gel is, as necessary, heat-treated to afford the aimed fibrous material, containing a glassy substance as a material and having cross-sectional shape set at an almost flat circle. Preferred examples of the above-mentioned alkoxide include silicon alkoxide, aluminum alkoxide, titanium alkoxide and zirconium alkoxide. |
