PURPOSE:To obtain a panel which is inexpensive and has high display quality by providing an inter-stage scanning electrode and driving the same with the specific waveform. CONSTITUTION:An inter-stage scanning electrode 18 which is connected with scanning electrodes 3-N, 4-1 and in which the space between both scanning electrodes is made to an electrode as well is provided with, for example, a two-stage matrix panel. The transparent conductor of the electrode 18 exists in a space 20 between the stages and therefore said space has the transmittivity roughly equal to the transmittance of the spaces 19, 21 in the step where the transparent conductors of signal electrodes 1, 2 are disposed, then the distance between the bottom side of the picture element 22 at the lowest end in the matrix part of the upper stage and the top side of the picture element 23 at the uppermost end in the matrix part of the lower stage is kept constant without depending on the rate of deviation in superposition. Potential is impressed according to a voltage averaging method to the scanning electrode in the matrix part of the upper stage and the signal electrode in the matrix part of the upper stage while the matrix part of the upper stage is in a selection period. A signal for electing the scanning electrode is impressed to the scanning electrode and the signal electrodes in the stage of selecting the inter-stage scanning electrode and a signal for not selecting the scanning electrode is impressed thereto in the stage of not selecting the inter-stage scanning electrode during non-selection period and the lower stage is operated in the same way, by which the considerable difference in the brightness among the picture elements is prevented. |
