PURPOSE:To carry out the rapid isomerization of the asymmetric carbon of the alcohol group of alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-isovalerate which is an excellent insecticide, by dissolving the compound in a protonic solvent. CONSTITUTION:An optically active alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl 2-(4-chlorophenyl)- isovalerate is made to react in a protonic polar solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc., or in a mixed solvent containing the same, preferably in the presence of a basic catalyst (e.g. basic ion exchange resin) at a temperature between -50 deg.C and the boiling point of the solvent, preferably at -20-+150 deg.C to obtain the objective compound. The catalyst should be hardly soluble in the solvent. The isomerization is accelerated by the addition of the catalyst. |
