PURPOSE:In obtaining the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing drugs and agricultural chemicals, a curing agent for epoxy resins, etc., by reacting an alpha-hydroxyarbonyl compound with a formamide, to improve the yield simply, by heating a reaction solution to a specific temperature to decompose by-products. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-hydroxycarbonyl compound is reacted with a formamide usually at 100-170 deg.C, preferably 120-140 deg.C at 0-50kgf/cm<2>G, preferably 5-25 kgf/cm<2>G further in an ammonia gas atmosphere. Consequently, the aimed reaction product is obtained and a large amount of formic acid is formed as a by-product. In order to remove the formic acid, the reaction solution is heat- treated usually at 100-250 deg.C, preferably 120-200 deg.C, further preferably 150-200 deg.C at normal pressure or under pressure so that formic acid in the reaction solution is reduced to <=2wt%. The remaining formic acid is removed by addition of an alkali.
