PURPOSE:To produce a novel solvent-soluble polyimide having improved heat resistance and low cyclinzing temperature from a polyamic acid into the polyimide, by reacting a specific tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with a silicone- containing diamine. CONSTITUTION:(A) 4,4',5,5'-Naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and/or 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and (B) a silicon-containing diamine expressed by the formula [R1 is 1-4C alkylene or (substituted) phenylene; R2-R5 are alkyl or (substituted) phenyl; Y is O or (substituted) phenylene] or the above-mentioned silicon-containing diamine and an aromatic diamine are dissolved in a polar solvent, e.g. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, etc., and reacted at <=80 deg.C to prepare a solution of a polyamic acid in the polar solvent, which is used to carry out suitable coating or processing. The resultant polyamic acid is further heat-treated at 100-200 deg.C to carry out cyclization from the polyamic acid into the aimed polyimide.
