PURPOSE:To enable the drying of a wet gel at a drying rate suitable to the drying period of the gel and to shorten the drying time, by sliding a double- cover of a drying box during the drying process, thereby changing the opening area of the cover. CONSTITUTION:In a production of a glass by sol-gel method, aged wet gel is transferred to a drying box and dried. A double-cover is used as a cover of the drying box and the size of opening is made to be varied by shifting a plate of the double-cover. The drying is carried out at a drying rate suitable to the drying stage of the wet gel and the time necessary for drying can be shortened by this process. The glass produced by the above method can be utilized in various fields such as optical fiber jacket tube or furnace core tube for semiconductor processing in the case of tubular glass or mask substrate, etc., in the case of a plate glass. |
