PURPOSE:To prevent volatilization of a collecting agent from the surface of fibers and to make it possible to keep improved handling properties of the titled fiber even after long-period preservation, by immersing and keeping an intermediate product of pitch carbon fiber in a storing solution tank charged with a lubricant. CONSTITUTION:In preserving an intermediate product fiber of pitch carbon fiber in each process of spinning, fiber doubling, infusible treatment, carbonization, etc., in production of pitch carbon fiber, the fiber is immersed and kept in a storing solution tank charged with a lubricant. A highly volatile substance such as lower alcohol, etc., are preferable as the lubricant. The fiber to be preserved is preferably immersed and kept usually in the state of bobbin winding or storage in a can.
