PURPOSE:To efficiently product a sex pheromone of insect pests of cotton, by reacting a 1,3-butadienylmetal compound with a haloalcohol having a protected alcohol group, deprotecting and acetylating the resultant product. CONSTITUTION:A 1,3-butadienylmetal compound expressed by formula I [M is MgX (X is Cl, Br or I) or Li], e.g. 1,3-butadienylmanesium chloride, etc., is reacted with a haloalcohol, expressed by formula II (R is 1-ethoxyethyl or 2-tetrahydropyranyl) and having protected alcohol group, e.g. 8-bromo-1-octanol protected with 1-ethoxyethyl, etc., to give a diene ether expressed by formula III, which is then deprotected to afford a diene alcohol. The resultant diene alcohol is then acetylated to provide 9, 11-dodecadienyl acetate (sex pheromone).
